Bio
Guitarist Carl Amundson, provides a unique energetic sound that can be heard in every performance and throughout all of his compositions and arrangements. Formerly of Chicago, Illinois, Carl has been a Florida resident for over 40 years. His musical education was started in the late 80’s and he developed a fondness for Jazz in the 90’s and he has been perfecting his talent since. Carl was trained in Classical, Jazz, and Bossa Nova thanks to his mentor and instructor, Frank B. Mullen, Jr.
Carl has performed a host of musical styles, such as Jazz, Blues, Bossa, Latin, Swing, and Classical at many events around the Tampa Bay area including (but not limited to): Suncoast Jazz Festival, Clearwater Jazz Festival, March of Jazz Festival, and Paradise Valley Jazz Party. Performance locations include: Ruth Eckerd Hall, The Vinoy – St. Petersburg, The St. Petersburg Pier, Coachman Park (now known as the Sound), Pia’s Trattoria, The Palladium, The Hangar Restaurant & Flight Lounge, Intermezzo, and more. Carl has made guest appearances on WMNF Radio, WUSF and other college jazz stations.
There have been many influences in Carl’s life, from local jazz greats John Lamb, Frank Mullen, Al Downing and Ernie Calhoun, to jazz legends like, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Jim Hall, Paul Desmond, Ray Brown, and Dexter Gordon, to name a few.
Carl has worked with John Lamb, Buster Cooper (both Alumni of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra), Frank Mullen, Nate Najar, Warren Vaché, Dave Frishberg, Joe Cohn, Jon Burr, Allan Vaché, Bob Wilber, Houston Person, Wycliffe Gordon, Butch Miles, Jeff Hamilton, Kenny Drew Jr., Michael Ross (from Nat Adderly’s quintet), John Merrill, Jeff Rupert, and Grammy nominated Dan McMillion. Carl’s varied credits have earned recognition in such publications as Just Jazz Guitar, 20th Century Guitar, St. Petersburg Times, among others.
